American/British English word forms (question especially for sussman, fitz, cmpilato)

The words:

travelling
travelled
marshalling
marshalled
dialogue
harkens

are accepted by Debian ispell with the american dictionary selected.

However, Jens Seidel says that aspell disagrees.

So, I'm calling this an "authors' preference" issue - what do you think?
